Book Review: Dirty cops and You

A 12-year-old aspiring magician plans to scare his mother's new boyfriend away, by hiring a hit man to kill him. But when the hit man attempts to execute the plan, the junior mob boss overhears the entire operation and sets in motion an intricate investigation that will take the life of two men and change the course of a city. It is a story with plenty of twists and turns that will keep you turning the pages as you struggle to find out who is who behind the hit. The story begins in the quietness of a small town in Mississippi where the newlyweds have just moved in. They are the perfect family - loving, doting parents who never had to worry about running out of time for church, sports, or family visits.

Their lives are suddenly changed when their son starts talking about the old TV show "The Great Show," a long-running joke that has been a mainstay in their home ever since their parents divorced. Feeling like he's onto something big, his father calls him over to his office to check it out. Walking out the door, he is stunned to see a coffee shop table set up with coffee packets, gumball machines, and a "for sale" sign. Suspicious, he goes inside to investigate further. While inside, he meets coffee-concealer and ex-cop Betty Gilpin. The two bond quickly and learn the man behind the "hit" is a high school dropout named James Coffee.

In order to clear his name, he enlists the help of his best friend, radio Callaway Andy Diggle, who happens to be a former dirty cop himself. Together they investigate every aspect of Coffee's life, from his days as a kid who was arrested so often that his teachers thought he should have a restraining order drawn up, to his current job as a corporate shoo-in. Along the way, they come across an incident that happened during a drug bust; in an effort to make up for their mistakes, Coffee purchases drugs himself to get clean. With the help of his new buddies, Coffee uncovers the dirty cops scheme to rob banks, and the team sets in motion to stop the robbery by force. With an exciting climax, the book closes with the realization that Coffee is now a real cop, ready to do battle against the bad guys.
