A Guide to Choosing the Best Coffee Grinder

A coffee grinder, or coffee mill, is a grinding coffee machine used to grind small hard objects between two rotating abrasive plates separated only by a small distance normally determined by the individual user. This type of equipment is typically called a blade grinder. Other types are the disk grinder and the screw grinder.

Manual burrs or wet grinders work with the force of hand pressure or rotation. Coffee beans ground using manual burrs are best known as espresso beans. Ceramic burrs, also called glass burrs, are made from ceramic materials that have the property of allowing coffee to flow through when ground. Ceramic burrs are the most commonly used in coffee production. Glass burrs were first used in the 1970's for coffee machines but they are not widely used today due to the higher cost of glass.

Built-in coffee grinders, as their name suggests, are built into the coffee maker. They can be purchased with or without a removable plate. Built-in grinders can improve the quality of the cup of coffee because they can finely grind beans to the desired level without having to use any additional coffee. Built-in grinders also typically provide a finer grind with less caffeine than other grinders. However, some models may not grind coffee beans evenly, therefore affecting the taste of the final product.
