Coffee Mug - Are Coffee Mugs Ceramic?

When I was in college I once bought a cheap coffee mug in bulk at the cafeteria. I decided to use it for a few months then disposed of it and never looked back. Upon reflection, I think that I might have been addicted to the plastic sensation that the disposable coffee mug provides. I also realized that a lot of people who live and die by their coffee habits probably don't want to go through the trouble of disposing of a coffee mug after every use.

If you've ever tried reusing your cheap disposable coffee mugs then you will quickly discover that after a couple of uses your coffee actually tastes nothing like what your mug has made it out to be. Plastic mugs suffer just as much in the taste department, it's not just plastic as a material it's everything else mixed together. Ceramic mugs tend to last longer than their plastic counterparts and can actually hold up to drinking from them for several years. To illustrate just how long a ceramic mug will last I'll give you the example of one very popular ceramic mug which still looks brand new today and is still the original color (in the shade of green).

Now, if you're looking for coffee mug material that has a strong odor to it then most likely you're looking for a coffee mug that is made from borosilicate glass. These coffee mugs are extremely strong and are used mostly as decorative pieces. You can get some great looking borosilicate glass mugs at major online retailers. However make sure that the glass is not tempered as this can cause problems with spilling. Plastic and ceramic mugs are your best options if you are looking for a strong odor free material.
